Presentation of the artist-resident at the SPACE Residency Lab in the framework of the international project HEICO.

Lado Darakhvelidze (*1977) is a Georgian multimedia artist living in the Netherlands. In his work he deals primarily with the topic of the media and their social and political impact on the public. His residency stay at SPACE Residency Lab is entitled Citizen Journal: Ideal Newspaper. It is apart of an open series realized in many other European countries in which the artist in co-operation with local volunteers conducts a probe into the Slovak internet in terms of the information media and their self-reflection.

Ideal Newspaper / Citizen Journal, 2010

Ideal News Paper does not represent the 'official' news, but the views of wide public. It can be seen as a reinstatement of citizenship and a form of direct democracy. It also serves as barometer about social and political interests, tendencies, prejudices and views of people. The project Citizen Journal integrates commentary from online newspapers articles into a self-published newspaper. By assembling these comments back into a printed newspaper, Citizen Journal manifests them permanently and transforms their anonymous authors into ‘citizen journalists’. The first issue of Citizen Journal was published in an edition of 100 on the occasion of ‘Manifesta 8’ the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Murcia, Spain. Design in collaboration with Simone Koller, Werkplaats Typografie Arnhem (Murcia Edition) and AagjeMartens (Belfast Edition).

During the presentation Darakvelidze presented the project to the public.
