Rohkunstbau is a creative and diverse annual art festival that has been taking place for over fifteen years in Brandenburg. The main focus of Rohkunstbau is the realization of site specific contemporary art exhibitions. Every year, we award ten stipends to established and emerging artists and ask them to create works for a specific location and theme.
The village in the city, the city in the village and the world as a global village are opposites that Rohkunstbau is trying to document. Between Berlin and Potsdam, close to the former border between East and West Germany, the presentation of art in the countryside and at the very edge of a sprawling metropolis is becoming the center of interest. Consequently, Rohkunstbau is becoming an element of identification in an economically poor region of Brandenburg and a crowd puller that emanates nationally and internationally. Despite the alleged museum and artspace boom in post-industrial society, the locations and financial possibilities for contemporary art production are becoming fewer and fewer. Often, art objects are turned into accessories rather than alive elements of a specific environment. This is why Rohkunstbau tries to emphasize the process of art production and interaction.
The idea is to strive towards a network that uses the potential of contemporary art in order to not only reduce the growing together of the European continent to a sociological level, but to also point to the personal and subjective ideas of the individual. Together with the founder and artistic director Arvid Boellert, the British art critic and curator Mark Gisbourne and a team of employees working in the cultural sector, Rohkunstbau is organized annually. For a number of years, Rohkunstbau has received significant support from the German state of Brandenburg. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, was the patron of the 2006 – 2008 exhibition trilogy “ THREE COLOURS – BLUE, WHITE, RED”.
